While some cable companies have upgraded to digital
cable offering more channels and better picture than basic analog cable
TV, having a satellite TV dish system is still far more convenient in
terms of picture quality, price, and available options.
One of the first things to consider is availablility.
While cable TV does have availablility issues you won't face this problem
with satellite systems such as Directv
and Dish
Network. With these all you need is a clear view of the southern
sky.
The cost of installation and programming is probably
the next issue that would cross your mind. Generally speaking, satellite
TV is cheaper and offers more extensive programming. The major suppliers,
Directv and Dish Network, offer free satellite systems and inexpensive
basic programming options with very few extra costs. On the other side
of the fence, cable TV can have many additional costs such as franchise
fees, taxes, plus costs for any pay per view services, and equipment
costs.
The third issue to consider is the programming in
itself. Cable TV usually offers more local channels since their market
is limited to local customers. However, you can still get your local
channels when you sign up for satellite TV offers. On the other hand,
satellite television is much more likely to offer specialty channels
with a national audience appeal.
Finally, you might also be concerned about outages.
Since your satellite reception with the Dish Network or Directv relies
on the physical condition of your dish, you may experience outages from
time to time due to extreme weather. However, it is reported that people
with cable TV actually have more downtime than those with satellite
systems.
